Low import duty on rice used to appease tea’s largest buyer PDF Print E-mail
Fear of retaliation by its biggest tea market, Pakistan, has forced the government to move with caution when it comes to rice and import duty.
Although the Ministry of Agriculture has unsuccessfully made attempts to intervene on behalf of farmers to have import duty on wheat, which was reduced from 35 per cent to 10 per cent in the 2010/2011 Budget, restored, it is reluctant to have the same done for rice and fully supports the reduction of duty from 75 per cent to 35 per cent.

New fertilizer to boost cereal farmers by improving acidic soils PDF Print E-mail

Cereal farmers are set to benefit from a new organic fertilizer best suited for high acidity soils such as those in the North Rift and parts of the Central Rift Valley.

The Tanzanian import is rich in phosphates and is marketed in powder and granular forms, according to Mr Eustace Muriuki, the general manager for Mea Fertilizers.

Despite recent drops in international food prices, the cost of the average food basket is 69 percent higher than six years ago
 3 June 2010, Rome - International prices of key food staples have dropped during the first five months of 2010 according to the latest edition of FAO's biannual Food Outlook report, released today.

The FAO Food Price Index averaged 164 points in May 2010, down from 174 points in January and substantially less than its peak of 214 in the spring of 2008, the report notes.
