Low import duty on rice used to appease tea’s largest buyer
Fear of retaliation by its biggest tea market, Pakistan, has forced the government to move with caution when it comes to rice and import duty.
Although the Ministry of Agriculture has unsuccessfully made attempts to intervene on behalf of farmers to have import duty on wheat, which was reduced from 35 per cent to 10 per cent in the 2010/2011 Budget, restored, it is reluctant to have the same done for rice and fully supports the reduction of duty from 75 per cent to 35 per cent.

Short-term gains of price controls outweighed in long term, say analysts
